Statement from MPP Bailey on the Sarnia Jail

“While we do not have details on the Minister’s planned announcement, it is clear that our community has been put through the ringer over the last two-and-a-half years regarding the future of the Sarnia Jail and the 80 men and women who work there.”

“I am, however, immensely proud of how our community of Sarnia-Lambton has pulled together to save the Sarnia Jail.”

“I remember that day in March 2011 when I was sitting in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario and the Liberal government used their Budget as a surprise announcement to close our jail after zero research and zero consultation with our community.”

“Since that time I have been very proud to work with the Sarnia Save the Jail Committee and others in our community to help make the case that this decision was short-sighted, did not make economic sense and did not fit within a strategy to meet Ontario’s correctional needs. We have worked with many affected groups in our region, written many letters, presented numerous petitions, held many meetings in Toronto and met with two ministers and a premier to date.”

“What can be said is that through working with the community we have been able to successfully pressure this government and prove to them that the decision to close the jail never made sense.”
