$8.2 million in water/wastewater project funding welcomed by MPP Bailey
LAMBTON COUNTY – Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey is welcoming last week’s official announcement of almost $8.2 million in federal and provincial funding under the Canada-Ontario Clean Water and Wastewater Fund (CWWF) agreement.
“This is truly wonderful news for all the communities receiving funding,” says MPP Bailey. “It’s also a tribute to what can be accomplished when federal and provincial ministries work collaboratively.”
A total of 89 projects were approved in 32 communities across the province as part of the latest announcement by Infrastructure Canada on Wednesday, May 24th. “The funding will improve the safety and quality of water for Canadian families, while addressing critical infrastructure needs,” says MPP Bailey.
The Government of Canada is providing Ontario with over $569 million under CWWF (up to 50% of the eligible project costs), while the provincial government is providing up to $270 million (up to 25% of total eligible project costs). The recipients will provide the balance of funding.
A total of 13 project funding announcements were made in MPP Bailey’s riding.
Topping the local list was the City of Sarnia, which received a federal contribution of $2,738,879 and provincial contribution of $1,369,440, combined with the city’s contribution of $1,369,440 to achieve completion of the Talfourd, Devine and Side Streets Combined Sewer Separation Project.
In response to the announcement, City of Sarnia CAO Margaret Misek-Evans, comments, “We very much appreciate the support and efforts of MPP Bob Bailey on the city’s behalf to secure and expedite the funding to allow as much time as possible to complete the work within the allocated period.”
The Town of Petrolia will be funded $419,278 by Ottawa, with $209,639 coming from the province, for its Separation of Existing Combined Sewers at Florence-Egan-Kerby.
“We are incredibly grateful for the financial support from the province of Ontario in regards to the CWWF funding,” says Mayor John McCharles. “Our gratitude to MPP Bob Bailey goes beyond measure for his ongoing work to help us continue to grow and develop our community.”
St. Clair Township will receive $1,777,500 in federal funding and $888,750 in provincial funding for a total of nine projects. Two of the largest projects being funded are for Wastewater Lagoon Optimization in Port Lambton ($1.125 million in combined funding) and in Sombra ($675,000 in combined funding).
The Town of Plympton-Wyoming will see $353,744 coming its way from the federal government, along with $176,872 from the province. The grants are for the replacement of existing watermains on Mockingbird Lane, Cardinal Lane, Pheasant Lane, Hummingbird Lane and Sandpiper Trail.
A total of $174,951 in federal money and $87,476 in provincial funding has been allocated to the Village of Point Edward for replacement of lids on the digester tanks at the Waste Water Treatment Facility on Alexandra Avenue.
“I’m proud to have played a role in securing this funding for our local municipalities,” says MPP Bailey. “Working with my federal Conservative colleague, MP Marilyn Gladu, and the various Sarnia-Lambton municipal governments, we’re helping to rebuild critical water and wastewater infrastructure.”
