SARNIA — Construction is underway on Trillium Villa Nursing Home, a new 160-bed long-term care home in Sarnia. The new project was a recipient of the recently extended Construction Funding Subsidy top-up program as part of the Ontario government’s commitment to build more than 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across the province.

“Congratulations to the team at Trillium Villa Nursing Home on the construction of this new home. Our government is fixing long-term care and ensuring we build homes for seniors in the communities they helped build,” said Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, Minister of Long-Term Care. “Today marks a significant milestone for Lambton County. When construction is complete, 160 residents will have a modern and comfortable place to call home.”

The new Trillium Villa Nursing Home building will replace an existing 152-bed long-term care home. It will bring eight new and 152 upgraded and redeveloped beds to the community and is expected to welcome its first residents in mid-2026.

The new building will be fully air conditioned and designed to modern standards. It will feature five “resident home areas” (RHAs), each of which create a more intimate and familiar living space for up to 32 residents, with dining and activity areas and lounges. The RHAs will surround a central courtyard and contain their own dining rooms, activity spaces, lounge areas, outdoor balcony/patio, and nursing and utility spaces. The home will also feature a chapel, café, tuck shop, beauty salon, outdoor courtyard, gardens, exam rooms and balconies.

The government is fixing long-term care to ensure Ontario’s seniors get the quality of care and quality of life they need and deserve. The plan is built on four pillars: staffing and care; quality and enforcement; building modern, safe, and comfortable homes; and connecting seniors with faster, more convenient access to the services they need.

Quick Facts

  • The redeveloped home will be operated by S & R Nursing Homes Limited.
  • As of October 2024, 115 projects representing a total of 18,823 new and redeveloped beds are completed, under construction, or have ministry approval to construct.
  • As part of its plan to fix long-term care and address sector waitlists, the government is building 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across the province.
  • Building more modern, safe and comfortable homes for our seniors is part of the Government of Ontario’s Fixing Long-Term Care Act, 2021.
  • The province is taking innovative steps to get long-term care homes built, including modernizing its funding model, selling unused lands with the requirement that long-term care homes be built on portions of the properties, and leveraging hospital-owned land to build urgently needed homes in large urban areas.
