EAST GWILLIMBURY — The Ontario government is welcoming an investment of more than $165 million by the Convertus Group to build a new, state-of-the-art biofuel facility in York Region, converting organic waste into renewable energy. Leveraging the province’s skilled workforce, this investment will create 52 good-paying jobs for the local economy and further position Ontario as a leader in waste treatment, processing and renewable energy. In support of Convertus Group’s investment, Ontario is providing $2 million in funding through the Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Competitiveness (AMIC) stream of the Regional Development Program (RDP).

“Convertus’ investment serves not only as a vote of confidence in our municipalities, manufacturers, and workers, but in Ontario’s role as a reliable and trusted partner for growth,” said Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “Through the Regional Development Program, our government is proud to support a company that is increasing our resilience and self-reliance across domestic supply chains and reinforcing the province’s leadership in next-generation technologies and solutions.”

One of the largest North American operators of organic waste management, Convertus’ new biofuel facility will be the first of its kind in Canada, using advanced technology to convert organic waste into renewable natural gas. Throughout the build and operation of the facility, Convertus will prioritize sourcing from local suppliers, strengthening the region’s economy and creating new opportunities for Ontario’s world-class workers.

“This investment by Convertus Group is a tremendous win for the York–Simcoe community. It brings cutting-edge technology, new jobs, and long-term environmental benefits right to our doorstep,” said Caroline Mulroney, MPP for York–Simcoe. “I’m proud to see our government supporting innovative projects that protect and strengthen our local economy for years to come.”

First launched in 2019, the RDP provides tailored supports to businesses and municipalities, helping them invest in the equipment, technologies and skilled workers they need to grow and remain competitive in a shifting economic landscape. To date, Ontario has welcomed more than $2.3 billion in new investments through the RDP, creating over 4,300 jobs across the province.

“Support from Ontario’s Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Competitiveness stream is helping Convertus adopt advanced technologies for the York facility,” said Mike Leopold, CEO of Convertus Group. “The site will be the first in Canada to use CO2 liquefaction technology, capturing emissions and converting them into food-grade liquid CO2 for use across multiple industries. As the premier facility of its kind in Canada, the Convertus York project will set a new benchmark for sustainable waste management and renewable energy production.”

Quick Facts

  • In 2022, the Advanced Manufacturing and Innovation Competitiveness (AMIC) stream of the RDP was launched to support advanced manufacturers across the province. Ontario is now providing additional funds to enhance the AMIC stream that will help more firms with the financial support and tools needed to improve competitiveness.
  • Through the AMIC stream, the government has announced investments of over $49 million in 42 companies and organizations. This has leveraged $675 million in investments from industry, creating over 1,100 jobs.
  • Ontario has the largest cleantech and environment sector in Canada, with over 140,000 employees, representing 40 per cent of Canada’s employees in this space.
  • Applications for the next intake round of AMIC funding began on November 4, 2025, and ends February 3, 2026.
